Generali China Life Insurance Co., Ltd. (GCL), founded in 2002 as a joint-venture between Assicurazioni Generali S.p.A. (Generali) and China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), was the first Sino-foreign joint-venture insurer approved by Chinese Government after China joined the World Trade Organization. At present, the registered capital of GCL is 2.7 billion RMB and its total assets are more than 30 billion RMB, making GCL the largest joint-venture life insurer in China.

Generali was established in 1831 and has had nearly 180 years of experiences in the insurance industry. As one of the largest insurance groups in the world, Generali has insurance and financial entities in 68 countries and regions worldwide. CNPC is China's largest oil and gas producer and supplier, as well as one of the world's major oilfield service providers and a globally reputed contractor in engineering construction. Its sales revenues, total assets and profits are always one of the highest among the large enterprises in China. Among the Fortune Global 500 companies in terms of revenue, Generali and CNPC have long ranked among top 50.

In 2009 the total premium income of GCL rose to 4.499 billion RMB, ranking 2nd largest among foreign and joint-venture life insurers, with a production about double of 2008, far above the average annual growth rate of the whole life insurance industry in China.
